The Senate Hearing Room was awash in salty tears Tuesday as the freshman senator from New Jersey, Cory Booker let it all out. Booker displayed such abject grief and rage and despair, even hardened senators, their staffs and members of the media were reduced to tears.
Before the the Senate Judiciary Committee, Booker excoriated Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen for her unwillingness to acknowledge Donald Trump’s racism and shocking profanity and her “complicity” in “nurturing racism” and apparently to not join him as he expressed “tears of rage” over President Trump’s alleged ‘s—hole’ remark.
“Your silence and your amnesia is complicity,” Booker said.
It was theatrical performance seldom if ever seen in a Senate committee hearing.
There is a popularly known term in show business, “chewing the scenery“, used to describe a particularly bad or extremely amateurish acting performance.
The Urban dictionary provides a definition: “A common term for a scene where an actor’s acting so damn hard that they’re picking bits of scenery out of their teeth for days. Actors who really go “all out” are said to chew the scenery”.
On Tuesday, Senator Booker offered a definitive performance of that term.
Booker “chewed” enough scenery to feed a herd of hungry buffalo. Had he gone on for very much longer the “hook” would surely have come out.
It’s rumored that to conclude the afternoon’s hearing, Senator Booker was joined by fellow senators, the equally emotional Durbin and Schumer to sing a rousing rendition of the “UNCHAINED Melody and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”:
“Now, laughing friends deride,
Tears I cannot hide.
Oh-oh-oh-oh, so I smile and say,
“When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes.”
Smoke gets in your eyes.”
Cory Booker is an impersonator but he is not a member of the Platters. He and Durbin and Schumer are members of the Sputters.

Do these actions appear to be those of confident men, sure they are winning? They appear to me drowning men, splashing and flailing about, desperate to find a piece of flotsam to keep themselves afloat.
