A nation of laws…keep makin’em ’til you find one you want to enforce

A NATION OF LAWS

Yesterday’s post:

“The IRS agreed to pay $3.5 million to groups that were wronged by the intrusive inspections, and insists it’s made changes so that political targeting can’t occur in the future.”

Tell me, folks…you remember all that stuff about “America is a ‘nation of laws’…and we are governed not by the rule of man, but by the RULE OF LAW”!

May I share a conclusion I have reached of late in observing the goings on in Washington and in our federal government’s most ‘revered ‘ institutions.

Have you heard some of these pronouncements from our nation’s leaders in recent years?

– “Our immigration system is broken! We need comprehensive immigration laws!”
Or this:

– “The report did not find any evidence of political bias or improper consideration actually impacting the investigation under review. … Nothing in the report impugns the integrity of our workforce as a whole, or the FBI as an institution,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said.
Or this:

– “The IRS is making changes so that ‘political targeting’ can’t occur in the future”

First, let’s take that “broken” immigration system:

Isn’t it great to hear that the leaders of our nation’s highest legislative body ARE going to pass some immigration laws that are going to, once and for all, ‘fix our broken immigration system’?

And this time, they really, really mean it!

But, wait a minute. How did our current ‘immigration system’ get ‘broken’?

‘Way I see it, the folks who have managed and enforced our current immigration system neither ‘managed’ it nor ‘enforced’ it. “Why not?” One might ask.

Seems obvious to me that, for political or personal economic, or incredibly misguided ‘social’, reasons, the folks the nation depends on to assure order in our society and those vested with the authority to enforce our laws and thus assure order, didn’t like those laws. And, coming from their narrow range of interests, knew they could not persuade the overwhelming majority of American citizens to change them to their unique satisfaction, SO they simply chose the route of “breaking the system”!

So, if that’s now the accepted standard for governance in this nation, why pass new laws and establish a new ‘system’ unless it satisfies the narrow, special interest of the most powerful? “Non-enforcement” and keeping it ‘broken’ has worked pretty well for them.

That OK with you?

Moving on to the recent “scandal” within the Department of Justice, and specifically the FBI…

We must, in all fairness, suggest that the recently named Director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, is surely not as dimwitted as he appeared to be when he asserted that, while there is “…no evidence of political bias…”, nor anything to impugn the “integrity of our workforce…or the FBI as an institution…” in the recent Inspector General’s report, Wray then went on to announce that he is… “implementing new rules….including political bias training…and policies regarding public statements on ongoing investigations and uncharged conduct…”.

Gee. To think that the FBI has been around all these years and all those bureau employees are now going to get some ‘in-depth’ training on how not to let political bias influence their criminal investigations.

Boy! That’s a relief!

Objectivity rules!

– And now, about that IRS “settlement”.

Again, doesn’t it warm your heart and restore your confidence, knowing that all those politicians and bureaucrats are ‘looking’ out for you’…for all of us.

Maybe you’ve been afraid that the IRS could ‘target’ you, based on your political beliefs.

Well, you may now rest easy. Even though, it never happened, be assured it won’t happen again.

Although the IRS has been around, essentially since 1913, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the agency was reorganized and a ‘political patronage’ system was replaced with “career professional employees”, like Lois Lerner, for example.

But, as we all know, even a topnotch outfit like the IRS can’t do everything all at once. So the good news is that those career professionals have now gotten around to ‘making changes’ so that “political targeting” can’t occur in the future.

No longer, trusting citizens, need you fear that, out of simple misunderstanding of the agency’s mission and lack of training in fairness and objectivity, career professionals, like Ms. Lerner, will no longer engage in goodhearted political targeting.

We’ve now been assured, in no uncertain terms, that “that will not occur in the future!”

Well…about time they stopped that!  I’m so thankful that we’re a nation of laws!
