Stop the Special Counsel madness! (With some common sense provisos)

SAVE AL FRANKEN, RETURN TO REGULAR ORDER, DO NOT NAME ANOTHER SPECIAL PROSECUTOR!

“If you want to hate Donald Trump, feel free. But a sane world would have dropped the Russia stuff months ago, just as a sane world would get over Hillary’s crimes so that what’s left of the country’s institutions could get back to normal governing.”

That’s the main conclusion in a column by Daniel Henninger in Thursday’s WSJ.

I believe it is a view commonly held among the Washington and media elites who try to appear politically objective, and “truly concerned” about the future of this great nation.

I find it both disingenuous and alarming.

To summarize Mr. Henninger’s assertions,

– Special counsels (SC’s) are both bad and unnecessary

– Democrats and media should not have pushed for the “Russia” investigation by a SC and Comey was very wrong in naming his buddy, Mueller.

– Republicans would be wrong to name a SC to investigate the various “crimes” of the “Obama/Hillary reign” because it would compound the ‘wrongness’ of the Comey action.

– Henninger joins many in the media in wringing his hands over the ‘hysteria sweeping the entertainment, business and political worlds. As “Geraldo” said Friday in answer to a question about ‘where will this all (the current frenzy over sexual exploitation in media, government, etc) end?’…”the sky’s the limit”, was his assessment.

Rivera, while excoriating the behavior of those accused especially those in congress, he went on to deplore the “weaponization” of the movement to stamp out sexual harassment and exploitation.

Like Henninger, he called for a return to calm and reason and, as Henninger in pleading for Republicans to not appoint another Special Counsel, Geraldo was joined by another FOX news personality to say that Al Franken should not to be expelled from the Senate for his repugnant behavior: “This must stop…both sides, blah, blah!”

It occurs to me that this is how these matters always seem to go. When the left’s ‘scorched earth’ strategies intended to ruin and destroy their ideological or political opponents backfires on them, civilization faces certain doom.

The strategy, if it continues to be used by both sides on a rapidly escalating pace, the story goes, the republic, indeed, civilization itself will end. “It must stop here…it must stop now!”, is the demand by all ‘sober’ parties, like Mr. Henninger, Geraldo, et al.

Recall the case of the “nuclear option”. When it was considered by some in the GOP when GW Bush was president, near panic engulfed the entire body politic. This would destroy over 200 years of sound government practice, we were told. John McCain led a bi-partisan ‘Gang of Eight” to the rescue…the action was rejected, the Republic was saved.

As soon as the Democrats regained the presidency and a majority in the Senate, however, Harry Reid immediately implemented the “nuclear option’ in order to ‘pack’ our courts with left and far left radical judges. There was no panicked reaction; the government did not fall.

Then, having recaptured the Senate and the presidency, many GOP senators and an overwhelming majority of their constituents were more than happy to use Mr. Reid’s ploy in order to install their picks for the courts, and right wrongs of the despicable former Senate Majority leader and his president.

Ah, but “NO!”, cautioned the irrepressible John McCain and the legislative genius Mitch McC. They promised again those dire consequences if the righteous Republicans did not
return to “regular order”…allow the Dems to filibuster conservative nominees for judgeships. Fortunately good sense prevailed and Mr. Reid and his Democrat colleagues could regret his actions.

And now we are seeing those “bi-partisan” demands that the GOP not name a second Special Counsel!

And, we are hearing the pleas to step back and see how much “different” is the case of sexual misconduct by a Roy Moore vs. Al Franken.

The pattern is always the same, is it not?

When coordinated effort to demean and destroy individuals, and paint the entire political opposition as ‘co-culprits’ backfires on the left/Democrats, the calls of the ‘righteous’ to “stop this madness now, and stop it here!” are heard throughout the land.

OK! WE AGREE!, WITH ONE SMALL NOTE: IN EACH INSTANCE THE “MADNESS” MUST STOP, NOT WITH THE COUNTER-PUNCH, BUT WITH THE ORIGINAL ATTACK.

– SAVE THE DETESTABLE AL FRANKEN IF YOU HAVE THE STOMACH FOR IT, DEMOCRATS…BUT ALSO APPLY THE SAME ASSUMED REDEMPTION TO ROY MOORE, REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS.

– RETURN TO “REGULAR ORDER”, SANCTIMONIOUS SENATORS…BUT ONLY AFTER THE “REID CUDGEL” HAS BEEN WIELDED TO THE SAME EXTENT AND INTENT BY THE CURRENT SENATE. THEN, ALL SIGN ON TO THE ‘SOLEMN PLEDGE’ TO ALWAYS ADHERE TO “REGULAR ORDER”, GOING FORWARD.

– FINALLY, STOP, NOW AND FOREVER, THE PRACTICE OF NAMING SPECIAL COUNSELS…BUT FIRST, RECALL THE MUELLER CHARGE AND IMMEDIATELY CANCEL THE CURRENT SPECIAL COUNSEL INVESTIGATION!

Bonfire of the Prosecutors
Political animosities are pushing the U.S. toward a significant political crisis

American politics has become an endless fox hunt. The hounds’ heads jerked up this week on news that Attorney General Jeff Sessions, responding to a request from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, had asked the Justice Department’s career lawyers to look into the possibility of appointing a second special prosecutor, to investigate Hillary Clinton.

Set aside for a moment what the precise meaning of “investigate” might be. The day doesn’t pass anymore without a demand, from the Oval Office or the ozone, that someone should “look into” some political malefaction. Theoretically, we could have public officials being led to the executioner’s block weekly in Washington.

Indeed, the movement to name a second special prosecutor flows from the fact that the Washington press corps in January decided en masse to “look into” the notion that the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia to defeat Mrs. Clinton, a thought dropped into the water by the departing Obama administratio
