Open primaries and early voting are worse

The Drudge Report,  which is pretty much in the bag for Trump, provides him yuuge generally favorable publicity at every turn, with “interpretive headline” links, often sensational, that push the right buttons, regardless of whether the actual story has much to recommend it, or is from a reliable source.

Having cautioned about that, it is a convenient source for lots of timely links to articles that conservatives need to know about. We still refer to it for the good it does, sensational tinge or not, but with eyes wide open about the headline game it plays and its selectivity.

So this morning there was a link to a story suggesting ballot stuffing and or extreme laxity in Utah’s caucuses yesterday, we think it an effort to de-legitimize Cruz’s overwhelming win (one of the few this season that was an outright win and not a plurality). The story link is no longer present on Drudge so we do not have it for you as such but darned if World Net Daily didn’t pick up on it.  Their link and narrative promulgating and sensationalizing an accusation is:

Here is a screen grab of the referenced blog site, an anything goes discussion board with apparently little or no filter as to veracity or authentication. There seems to be no original reporting.

We responded to the WND article referencing the site as follows:

Giving legs to this story is irresponsible. Drudge, which is all in for Trump, started it. The source is a commenter to the blog site Godlike Productions, the head space advertises “UFO’s . . . Conspiracy Theories . . . Lunatic Fringe. Drudge no longer posts the particular article.

Precinct caucus procedures are often casual, disorganized but not necessarily dishonest. The question is did Trumps precinct captain (presumably someone who had actually attended one before) not observe what was going on, not observe the ballots being deposited, not observe the counting? Did the total of all the candidates not match the number checked in for that precinct caucus? The real subversion in some caucus states occurs when the delegates elected do not represent the caucus results.

A more substantial concern this election is same day registration and open primaries were anyone gets to wander in without serious predisposition and possibly subvert the party (caucus or primary). Primary states with such looseness are no more authentic, I would argue less so although caucus states are trying to turn what is an appropriate civic exercise into not much better than the characteristically uninvolved open primary attendees . We are seeing shades of it in Iowa, a caucus state.
