Argus-Dispatch Print Edition Trims Ethanol Commentary

Still, serves to undermine corn ethanol boondoggle

AD EthanolOur post yesterday made reference to a lengthy AP story * in the Argus-Dispatch online edition about the detrimental environmental effects of current corn ethanol production policies and practices.   We predicted that any print edition treatment would not be as extensive.

Today’s A-D has a front page headline story (no link available as yet) that focuses on Illinois farmers and their use of set aside acreages being devoted to corn for the production of ethanol. The main article today, also an AP story, has nowhere near the wide ranging negative content of yesterday’s online wire report.  However it does contain a highlighted shadow box compendium titled:  “7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ETHANOL.”  Five of the points are with reference to the “hidden price that government rarely acknowledges.”  It is a succinct summary. We will provide a link when it becomes available.

Recently we had an opportunity to speak with a well connected Iowa political operative.  We addressed the current politics of ethanol . . . was unabashed support for it still the third rail of Iowa politics?   The response was that it was much easier, far more accepted to speak of ending the corn ethanol perks . . . that political and economic sobriety regarding ethanol is setting in.       R Mall

*Don’t ask us why links go bad, the original link in our 11/11/13 article referencing the Argus -Dispatch does not work.  We think we found the same article here.    http://www.businessinsider.com/the-secret-dirty-cost-of-obamas-green-power-push-2013-11
