Repeating the False Narrative of No WMD’s

wmd-politics-1385183042Alicia Colon writing in Jewish World Review has a very worthwhile article titled            Right wing dementia on Iraq in full swing .  Along with her, we have also noticed ,with growing irritation,  some conservative commentators, and regular news reports, parroting in one variation or another the Left’s refrain that there were no weapons of mass destruction found in Iraq. One of the frequent offenders on the “news” side being “fair and balanced” Fox Radio News, which for the most part is just another pac news outlet.

The left insists on repeating the falsehood on the theory that saying it often enough makes it “true”  and that mainstream media will help with the anti-Bush anti-Republican propaganda.  It is incredible that this false narrative is being propagated  either out of laziness, capitulation to PC, ignorance or as Ms Colon says:

There are times that I have senior moments and forget certain names and events but after the recent Obama Iraq war implosion, I’m convinced most political pundits are suffering from them as well.

What is unusual is that this revision of history is being committed by conservatives who should know better. Recent commentary by Glenn Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer indicate that they have significant memory lapses about why we went to war in Iraq. They now suggest that it was a wrong decision whereas my complaint is that we took too long to invade and oust Saddam Hussein.

Her article refers to Glen Beck, George Will and Charles Krauthammer making careless statements feeding if not repeating the false information that no WMD’s were found. Colon goes on to relate facts  and individuals testifying to the presence of WMD’s.  To her  list we add recent statements by Fox News personage Megyn Kelly and Senator Rand Paul.

Rather than us parsing their false,  misleading or sloppy statements (links provided so you can see for yourself) we will instead use the space to provide links that may serve as useful permanent reference for readers regarding the matter.  There are many  more unique references and reports . Keep in mind as well that WMD’s were by no means the only reason for Operation Iraq Freedom (OIF).

It is also important to remember that our nation led a multinational force that supported the necessity of the armed enforcement of the terms of the armistice from the 1991 Gulf War. Saddam Hussein was incontrovertibly in violation of the terms he agreed to as regards cooperation with the inspections.  Given the rise of Islamic terrorism, along with the posturing and lies by Saddam Hussein,  and their demonstrated willingness to employ mass terrorism, murder  and war crimes in pursuit of their goals, it was irresponsible not to use definitive force to end the threat.

The links provided below incorporate other links to reports verifying the presence of WMDs hidden and unaccounted for prior to OIF and that verify that Iraq under Saddam Hussein had been involved extensively with acquiring  and maintaining capabilities of manufacturing and using WMD’s.  In anticipation of  multinational enforcement of of the terms of the 1991 Desert Storm armistice he arranged for transference of  much of his WMD arsenal to Syria.

This article about revelations from the actions of a significant hero of the left should have ended their false narrative of “no WMD’s”:   Wikileaks documents show WMDs found in Iraq

In this case, the surprise isn’t the data but the source.  Wikileaks’ new release from purloined files of the Department of Defense may help remind people that, contrary to popular opinion and media memes, the US did find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and in significant quantities.  While the invasion of Iraq didn’t find huge stockpiles of new WMDs, it did uncover stockpiles that the UN had demanded destroyed as a condition of the 1991 truce that Saddam Hussein abrogated for twelve years (via Instapundit):

Some of these discoveries have been known for years.  To the extent that the media covered these at all, these finds were generally treated as long-forgotten leftovers that somehow never got addressed by the Iraqi military in twelve years of UN inspections.  That, however, disregards completely the kind of totalitarian state that Hussein had imposed on Iraq, up to the minute that circumstances forced him into his spider hole in 2003.  Had Saddam Hussein wanted those weapons destroyed, no lower-ranking military officer would have dared defy him by keeping them hidden.  It would have taken dozens of officers to conspire to move and hide those weapons, as well as a like number of enlisted men, any and all of whom could have been a spy for the Hussein clique.

This is a great post and I completely agree, but can we honestly blame these people on “our side” for being anti Bush in this regard? Beck, George Will, Charles Krauthammer etc. stuck there necks out for years while getting pummeled without ANY backup from Bush, even to this very day!

I totally see why they don’t give a crap about re-engaging in old WMD arguments, especially with what is going on in the current corrupt regime! If GWB doesn’t care about history and setting the record straight, why the hell should these guys?

You are absolutely right. Bush’s above the fray stance has hurt his supporters. It may have given us John McCain as a candidate and subsequently Barack Obama.
